Yeah, the NYer piece (and this, though I read it second) really made me want to revisit the biography of Debs I read back in high school. Though now that I look it up, it’s from 1948. Maybe it’s time to pick up a different one or a book of his speeches/essays.

I think the reaction (disingenuous as it was) from the right is the predictable end point of insisting that intent doesn’t matter when it comes to potentially hurtful speech. Obviously Omar was referring to the song and the influence of money in politics but since intent is often disregarded, its easy to make a stink…

Exactly. Any sort of political grandstanding (and while I agree that the MAGA hat is a racist taunt, I still think the sign is grandstanding) in the service industry will just fall on people who are already exploited (and, very often, are POC, too.) But you know this.
