I'm not defending Polanski's crimes. I was only explaining the difference in why one of the two that you mentioned merits discussion while the other only merits derision. Roman Polanski deserves to be in prison and what he did is abhorrent, but a discussion of his work isn't an outlandish proposition.

If you want to take the hard line and say that Polanski's art shouldn't be appreciated due to his abhorrent crimes I am ok with that. I was simply noting the difference between the two that you compared.

They're both pieces of shit. But, one of them is a piece of shit that has produced some art that bears discussion. The other is a piece of shit that has no redeeming qualities of which we can glean any discussion of merit other than his utter repulsiveness.
