Donald Glover (who I like a lot, actually) subscribes to the “New Blackness” rhetoric. As does Jaden Smith (not surprising).

John Legend was, surprisingly, far more militant than Common in their acceptance speeches. Common was all “Extend a hand in love” whereas Legend actually mentioned the struggle, etc. I was pretty disappointed in Common’s speech.

The new black narrative is attractive to wealthy Black people and poor black people because it disregards the structural, systematic forces that shape our lives and gives us practical, personal ways to cope with them. In that way it is very much like a self help book- just another aspect of the American dream.
