Currently, Lade Eve is in that villain grace period where she can appear for only a couple minutes an episode, be vaguely threatening, and because other villains take her threats very seriously, we buy her as an intimidating presence. How she actually works as a villain is very much time-will-tell at this point.

All Cecile’s powers did this episode was let her know about the warden’s plans to sell Barry and the other metas. It kicked off the plot of the episode, but wasn’t used to resolve it.

Chidi would most likely speak English with the regional accent of whoever taught him/wherever he learned it. He may live in Australia now, but he may have initially learned English from Americans.

Here’s how I understand it:

When TV shows have a scene set in another country, they’ll often just have the characters speaking English, with the idea being that they’re really speaking their native language but it’s being translated for us. Like how you never heard anyone on Xena: Warrior Princess speaking Ancient Greek.

French would be his first language, so it would come most naturally to him, and as long as the Fake Good Place was automatically translating everything he said, there was no need to bother speaking anything else. But when he’s in Australia, where most people will not understand French, he uses English.

I think you missed the point of the Dinah and Vince flashbacks. They’re showing that they’ve been through a situation like this before, only then it was Dinah pushing them to take the risk for the sake of their mission, and it ended up costing Vince his life (or so she thought at the time).

I’ve predicted this before, and I’m certain I’ve posted that theory online, but can’t specifically recall if I’ve done it on the A.V. Club (and whether you’re using the old comments system or the new one, there’s no easy way to search the comments).

He’s teaching in Australia, so he’d probably HAVE to speak English. In the pilot, Chidi mentioned he was speaking French and the neighborhood was translating it for Eleanor, but that doesn’t mean he CAN’T speak English, too.

It’s probably a good thing this wasn’t made, because 1990's movie studios did NOT know how to make good superhero adaptations.
