Right on. Same for me & AND I went to an exclusive preppy school on scholarship too - and I STILL did not rape anyone. Not EVEN people who grew up in Asia. I guess I just must be amazing like that.

Seeing that part about him coming from a broken poor family really pissed me off. As if that is some sort of explanation or justification for raping someone? Surprisingly, I also come from a broken home and poorly family, and I have never raped anyone. Astonishing, I know.
And on Tuesday, just a week after SB Nation posted and quickly deleted a tomb that essentially erased the victims of former cop Daniel Holtzclaw,
He was 18, a scholarship boy from a bitterly broken home, a star scholar-athlete—captain of the varsity soccer team—who had won full-ride admission to Harvard, Princeton, Yale, Dartmouth, Brown, Duke, Stanford, Middlebury, and the University of Virginia, and two days later would be the winner of the headmaster’s award…
Use the buddy system. If you’re afraid you might rape someone, bring a friend who will tell you not to do it.
All of these stories have had a subtext like “It’s so hard to believe this happened.” Um, no, actually, for most women it’s not hard to believe at all.
For real, this guy’s description of Labrie was “star scholar-athlete” and award winner, but of the victim “privileged second-generation preppy” who had been warned already to stay away from him? And someone let this go to print?
Consent. It’s as simple as a cup of tea. Watch and learn, boys.
I tried to explain what apartheid was in a lecture about music from South Africa, yesterday, and was followed to my office by an angry student who didn’t want to hear about “any #blacklivesmatter bullshit” in a course they were paying for.
I’d teach the class in Texas, but I probably wouldn’t survive the semester.
Oh, girl! Did you never do/see the “oops wrong number!” trick in high school? All you do is “accidentally” text your crush that you like him and you’re single, and you would say yes to going out if he asked. Write it as if it’s to your friend, but text it to the guy. Then you can text “OMG! How embarrassing!!!!!” etc…
“by mistake”
Yeah, satire and comedy continually undermine serious political discussions.
Acts like this is what undermines legitimate causes.
“And we want to treat this with the seriousness it deserves, so we’re going to put you on GMA. Your segment would be between Rachel Ray and the winner of the Westminster Dog Show.”
This is what every Southerner thinks about Confederate history taught everywhere but the South.
I thought Kara Brown nailed it in the live blog when she said that the monologue seemed like jokes about white people for white people. Inviting that audience to chuckle about lynching?!? You’re going to make Chris Pine cry again!
“Once we’re in international waters, every woman on the ship gets to make love to whoever she wants,” Sean David Morton said, with a wink.
a bit of a personal segue: oates’ short story “where are you going...” was based on a true life murder account of charles schmid who was in his 20's but served as a svengali to teen-aged girls who wanted to hang around him. one of his admirers decided to leave the fold and he had two of the other girls murder her.
I had a similar experience. I went through puberty early and (I assume) looked older than I was. (But now I wonder: how much older could I have looked at 10 years old? 14? It was still wrong.)
“I also can’t ignore that Lori had already said no to David once, and had every reason to think it’d be safe to do so again.” <— Bingo.
