I actually prefer Icewind Dale to Baldur's Gate. Way less down time walking back and forth in cities, often doing mundane tasks (which can take hours, I spent more time walking in Baldur's Gate 2 than the entirety of most non-RPGs) and I have always liked the combat from these games.

With Ubisoft, I think it's job security. Because they have continual iterated franchises (Watch Dogs, Assassin's Creed, Far Cry) they are able to consistently rotate and ensure their studios are always at work. At least, that's what I've heard.
