Yeah, my experience COMPLETELY turned me off of religion - organized or not.
Ronald Reagan, Phyllis Schlafly, bringing the evangelicals into the mainstream as the ‘Silent Majority” (fuckers were never silent a minute of their lives). Reagan’s deregulation of communications, so now TV preachers were not only all over the place, hucksters, preachers and shills were legitimized, like Emily said.
There’s a very good book called Satan’s Silence that goes into the factors behind the Satanic Panic. It was such a weird confluence of issues and different lobbying groups: evangelical beliefs and conservatism, parental fears and the relatively new and public acknowledgement of CSA, even feminism’s focus on the woman…
I have heard this too but I also cannot remember where, maybe the MFM podcast. However, I did grow up in an evangelical household in the 1980s so the satanic panic was my childhood. We were only allowed to listed to shitty christian music, had to attend church so many times a week and anyone with a van was probably a…
My mother was all-in during the Satanic Panic of the mid-80s. She was a stay at home mom who had Trinity Broadcasting Network going all day. And she blindly followed whatever those televangelists were spouting.
