Totally agree; that and a few other things make it hard for me to accept this revisionist idea that everyone was in on the joke. I don’t think Elizabeth Berkley was in on the joke, for example. “I’ll PRETEND to act badly, and I’ll do it so well that my career won’t recover. Genius.”

For people who regularly rewatch this because of the camp value: There’s an insanely brutal rape scene that comes out of almost nowhere, which would seem to threaten the purely fun viewing experience. Do you just fast forward through that or is it all part of the journey?

He's white.

Also, unlike Wiseau, Verhoeven has shown that he’s fully able to make legitimately good/fun movies that use campiness intentionally (Robocop, Starship Troopers, etc).

So why is Michael Bay a free man?

A much-maligned critical and commercial flop at the time of its release that became a surprise hit on home video

It’s not like he was free and running around. He was in a hospital under police supervision the whole time - he wasn’t going anywhere.

Sweet!  This show is so much better than Titans.

It’s amazing how Brendan Fraser is able to make “The fuck?” a legitimate catchphrase with his delivery.

What? What? No

By garr! I thought Beverly Hills Cop II was the worst piece of junk ever, a giant step down from the first movie. My opinion is certainly no more valid than yours, though, but I’m curious: what do you like about the sequel? I ask not to challenge, but in the spirit of having my eyes opened to new and unlikely

Same.  He was great in most things.  But he was the perfect symbol of small town tyranny.  God he was the perfect foil to John Rambo.  More detestable then any Russian or whatever villain in the series.

How dare he have a problem with this reclusive military psycho shooting up his town! What a dick!

He’s Americas answer to Otm Shank.

The really interesting thing is that the sheriff is a much more sympathetic character in the original novel, and despite all that being taken out in the script, Dennehy put a lot back in purely by performance.

No matter what character he played, he was always still some of the sheriff from First Blood to me.

Just wanted to compliment his work on First Blood which is a somewhat thankless villain role, but which he made into something a little more interesting and sympathetic. RIP

This is a piece I needed to read right now. I keep vacillating between pretending everything will be fine in a few months and feeling despondent about the fact that nothing will ever really be the same.

In short: there aren’t real heroes in war. Or rather, the real heroes are the ones fighting for their (and their loved ones’) lives, not the ones calling the shots.
