I agree with the sentiment, but at the same time I want “honor killings” to be associated with stuff like this: cowardly, senseless, backwards, outdated, and ultimately useless patriarchal fundamentalism.

Also, can we stop calling them ‘honor killings’? It’s murder, plain and simple. The root of the motive may be sexist, patriarchal cultural ideas, but it’s still murder. Calling it ‘honor killings’ implies there a legitimate reason for it, or that culture can be used an excuse. It cannot.

Well, the italian criminal code considered a man killing his sister, wife, or daughter because she tarnished his “honor” a mitigating circumstance until the 1980s.

To me, the bigger deal is that she did all that in a oppressive religious environment where doing those things was actually dangerous, and not in a “a few anonymous trolls might send me some threats” kind of way either.

The differentiating factor is not Muslim vs Christian, or even all religion vs no religion. It’s Fundamentalism that moves people to violence.

I have a Pakistani but British born friend here in London. He’s 10 years younger than me. We live in different worlds. If you all lived in London I could name the neighbourhoods and you would know.
