Hey, GM took over half the US car market with internecine competition and overlapping product ranges. They declined rapidly when they stopped that - coincidence? 

Well, clearly its for someone that wants something bigger than the 5-Series, but with 4 doors. 

Actually, I believe “Range Rover” was used as the make in the US market from about 1987-1992. 

Capacity issues probably play a role, too, these are handmade cars with almost no automation in the assembly process. Could Toyota even support wider sale if they wanted to, and maintain the same level of craftsmanship?

The trouble with the standard Century is that it is built for a king, which makes it a tad plain for an emperor.

Eh, just following the rest of the industry away from vertical integration and toward assembly of brought-in components. This is basically the same thing Ford did with Visteon and GM with Delphi years ago.
