His breakdown of why horror films seemed scarier on VHS was great. It truly put into words why the format was so effective for that genre.

I read AICN for a little bit in high school in the early 2000s because I was clamoring for scoops on cool nerd stuff in development. Then once I read Harry Knowles’ review of Blade II, where he compared Del Toro serving his geek audience to performing cunnilungus on a woman (this coming from a guy who looks like Pizza

Plus just because he plays a character on tv who was formerly fat doesn’t mean he should play a character in the movies who was formerly fat. It’s uninspired thinking like that that gives us “Bryan Cranston should be Lex Luther because bald” articles.

The fact that Alec Baldwin has an Emmy for his Trump impersonation and Atamanuik doesn’t shows how much more exposure that guy needs.

Watch The Gift with Jason Bateman. It’s a thriller and he’s fantastic in it. I could totally see him doing former stuttering kid who becomes reluctant leader. Plus him acting off Chastain is something I never knew I needed.

Ok avclubbers, let’s cast the sequel. This is a combo of my choices and some nice picks across the web.

I write for a website called “Goomba Stomp.” They’re centered around video games but they absorbed an old film website I used to write for so it’s a pop culture site now. They’re trying to stay pure the way Avclub used to be. They have some really great podcasts, specifically their Sordid Cinema one.

Trump isn’t even worthy of being compared to a dog. I’d call him an insect but insects live by instinct and their nature. He’s more like human cancer.

For some reason your description just made me realize what Paul Thomas Anderson in Boogie Nights mode could’ve done with this.

At least this time he looks to have gotten an actual cinematographer. Good god, I don’t know why he kept letting his movies look like bad college films.

He looks like he’s from every country in Europe combined.

I mean anything considered “art.” I can’t imagine he watches scripted movies and tv. “These characters aren’t talking about me. I don’t understand.”

I’m not sure I can picture him watching anything. In fact I can’t imagine Trump having a favorite movie or TV show at all. I’m running it through my mind and I don’t see it.

In Bruges was one of my favorite films from 2008. That movie is a dark comedy force. Seven Psychopaths...was a nihilistic and sometimes misogynistic piece of garbage. Such an uncomfortable and strained moviegoing experience. It came off like a ‘90s Tarantino knockoff writing a fable. Oh and the Joshua Tree desert in

I found the script two months ago and read it. Seeing as how I have no time to devour the novel before the movie comes out, it was a nice consolation. Fukunaga’s script is a nice tight piece of writing. As someone who has been delving into script editing and has read some monstrosities, it’s so apparent what a good

I’ve had Exorcist III on VHS for years—which I’m guessing is a good way to watch it. I should get around to it finally.

Isn’t it wild to think that those split seconds were probably a few days of shooting? Some of the most awful images in cinema and the actors had to get all gored out for just another day of work. Wish the whole movie was that effective? Is the Directors Cut better?

Just mentioned Deadwood because it’s one of those classic shows that’s essential viewing and I finally got around to it. I guess the contrast would be that Deadwood drew me in after it’s first two eps while Stranger Things didn’t. They’re very different obviously.

I’ve never seen what either of them look like before so...yeah that’s pretty much what I should’ve expected. :/

So I finally watched the first two episodes of Stranger Things this year and...wow I cannot get into it for the life of me. It’s just so dull, the pacing is leaden and I have no interest in any of the characters. It seems like they’re using nostalgia to pepper over their rote story and uninvolving characters. It
