I can’t see how this story point is anything other than unforgivable. I haven’t seen the movie yet but I think knowing this, there’s almost no way it can make it a good movie for me. They dump on the ending of Return of the Jedi because they’re creatively bankrupt. Anything new would be better. Anything.

I have such beef with The Nightingale. The violence itself didn’t bother me, but the repetition (4 rape scenes) and provocation of it bugged me to no end. The Souvenir had amazing filmmaking for a story I almost cared nothing about. The filmmaking is strong enough for me to kinda like it. I think.

Short Term 12 is “serious, gritty indie about troubled characters” done right. It’s a gem.

A Most Violent Year is super underrated too.

I second Take Shelter and All is Lost. Shelter is just so effective. And All is Lost is a classic to me, a true force of nature. That directing feat should be up there with Miller’s work on Fury Road.
