Actually I disagree with the idea that your second scenario is good, sure it’s not as bad of a decision as the first but you’re still essentially renting a car and have absolutely nothing to show for your car payments. Also you’re one financial hardship away from being completely screwed.

When I bought my last car (was an entry level model from a luxury brand) the sales guy asked me if I wanted to lease or buy and my response was that if I had to lease it I couldn’t afford it. He actually chuckled a bit to that because of course the majority of his customers are in a lease.

Of course it was just luck that there was a police officer nearby when this went down. Who knows how bad it could have been if the police response was delayed by even 5 or 10 minutes.
