Manual transmissions don’t have torque converters.

I only buy new, of course I only buy a new car every 7-10 years so I may not be helping that much.

Part of the problem is that with some manufacturers (Mazda is definitely guilty of this) you can get a manual but only on the most stripped down base model. If you want any sort of features your end up with the auto you don’t want.

Yeah I’m not going to add throttle when I want the car to help me slow down, if that’s the “game” the “game” is stupid.

Sort of, there was only one TDI on the lot at the time I was ordering my car, it was a special order that had not been picked up by it’s owner yet. They did let me drive it but being mindful that this was someone’s specially ordered car I deliberately drove it very easy on the test drive.

It seems like longer than 2 seconds but no I haven’t actually timed it.

I did read the forum post you linked. That was more geared towards how to get the car to downshift so you can accelerate quickly what I use much more is downshift on decelerate so I can coast longer to a red light.
