There was no conflating of the two. It is deductive reasoning. They were using the current end of service to illustrate the point that always online will inevitably have this issue and thus, ultimately has no benefit for the end user.

They won’t do that, they want you to be reliant on them when they make another game in the series called “FPS: Ultimate Edition 2" 6 months down the line when they killed off the servers for the first game and you can’t play it anymore and the community is dead.

any game with unlockables tied to online service should have a built in “auto-unlock” kill switch when the servers are shut down. Also they should just release the software necessary to run your own servers so you can continue to enjoy the game you paid for.
