I listened to one of these douche owners on KCRW’s Press Play and this seems way more Fyre Festival bad than Sinclair Media bad. He was excited about all the potential ad sells for marijuana since Denver’s Westworld is the most successful local weekly due to pot advertising. He also wants more weed culture stories and

Counterpoint: Modern newspapers are garbage concerned only with churning mindless content to spur ad dollars. Many people looked to independents for that investigative journalism that doesn’t happen outside the Guardian or WaPo. They are wildly popular - which is why they are being shut down en masse by their new

LA Weekly out of print next month.

...or that they literally had no plan beyond gutting the existing staff, and have abruptly realized in a panic that they can’t put out a Weekly paper and maintain a website from scratch? (You’d be surprised how many of these types of douchebags really do think that a magazine just assigns, writes, edits, and publishes

You and I must be reading some different regional weeklies; the ones I know had it the other way round - they were beloved when they did good journalism but floundered when they became strictly arts & entertainment magazines.

i found most of the stories the OC weekly wrote about local politics and the OC sheriffs were so freaking bizarre (and true) it was wayyy better than any fiction. were talking “arrested development” levels of stupidity. in real life!

How are they planning to retain advertisers? As one of them, I don’t see a path to ROI after so profoundly and publicly destroying the LA Weekly brand.

It’s only the second most unrealistic Zootopia fan comic I saw today.

Hmm yeah, let’s discourage loitering by... putting down seating? Are you kidding?

wow it’s a good thing that post was specifically about train and subway stations, and not public space in general, otherwise i’d look like a real dunce

Everybody hears it somewhere first. I’m inclined to give it a pass.

Why have benches at all then? That’s what I don’t understand.

yeah, the fucking tragedy of...people staying too long in one place...in public...awful, just awful

“Why don’t they just move to somewhere they could get a job?????” - every American problem-solving brain genius

It’s in the video

Lately I’ve been wondering more and more often about whether or not it’s human nature to hate the poor or if it’s a malady that particularly infects contemporary America.

I have never loathed a protagonist as much as Wade. I actively rooted against him despite knowing how the entire plot would unfold within the first few chapters. He represents everything I hate about ‘nerd culture’- the arrogance and gate-keeping of those who consume it. That being said, I loved hate-listening to this

This was, hands down, one of the worst books written in the last ten years, and the film rights sold before the book was done. It’s nothing but regurgitating references without having them truly connect in any meaningful way. It was just “hey remember Zork, remember this, remember that” ad nauseam.

There is little of the plot—or its entirety—that can’t be condensed to a Hollywood elevator pitch. “What if The Matrix was also The Last Starfighter?”

I’m exactly Cline’s age and played with 90% of the toys/games he vomited up in that tome, and I was overcome with self-loathing around the book’s 4th list of entertainment detritus. It was like 459 pointless Family Guy references, but without laughs. Or exactly like 459 pointless Family Guy references.
