Distance from the boards is the difference in this hit. There is a sweet spot of distance where you can get really fucked up and Oshie was in that spot when he got hit. Too close to the boards, no injury. Farther away from the board he has time to get up or brace for the contact. 

Folks, this is also IIHF. Very different/confusing rule book, plus multiple game officials from different countries. There could be a language barrier 

How is this Finland getting hosed? They don’t score if the Finn doesn’t plow into the goalie. Not enough for a penalty, but definitely too much contact.

The word “directly” is important. It means that neither team possess the puck before going in. Possession is key in this situation and a goalie attempting to do his job (saving a puck from going in the net) does not count as possession.

As shitty as this press tour has been I just realized that it will be infinitely better than the actual fight.... 

Before the fight, doesn’t the referee say defend yourself at all times? I don’t think we saw enough of that so he stopped it before any serious injury.
