Jesus, that's terrible. I dated a guy whose family was the first family in GA to auction/own vast swaths of slaves. His attitude was "yeah, it happened, it was awful, we're not proud of it." I don't know how anyone could think that there is anyone to actually justify slavery.

Ugh, I hate the narrative that "slaves were happy and grateful" - yeah, being subject to rape, torture, starvation, and having your family and children ripped away from you sounds like something that would make people 'happy'.

You're kidding, right? Miss America has constantly policed their contestants' morality. Prior winners have had their crown revoked for getting sloppy drunk, taking nude photos, appearing in adult magazines, etc. The fact that they are letting the current Miss America's actions slide by is just amazing.
