I mean, we kind of already have that with people up for parole. Like with Charles Manson and the remaining Manson girls. They’ve been consistently denied parole, despite a lot of indications that they have general remorse and were model prisoners. Essentially in Norway, and most countries, there is no such thing as

She isn’t horrible - just has poor judgement, self importance and a lot of regret. It is just sad reallt. I have heard a few people I know (I’m in UK) say “i am Fleabag” in a middle-class angsty way. Of course they aren’t, a lot of her stuff is exaggeration for effect. But it is exactly the kind of sad nonsense

Well to be fair I haven’t seen the show, and it sounds like this post doesn’t describe the character well. The way you describe it makes her sound a lot more relatable.

On top of that, prisons offer jobs for people in poor rural areas, far from the homes of the prisoners.

The thing about the article is, it mentions “monetization” of prisoners in passing, but that doesn’t really require prison labor. Simply cutting costs in order to ensure profitability on each inmate, and lobbying for laws that provide lots of inmates, are sufficient for that.

I don’t agree with the post. The character is not horrible; she’s struggling with fresh grief and guilt and doesn’t have anyone who knows how to help her.

Anders Breivik did not get only 21 years prison, he will have to face the parole board. After 21 years they can extend his time in prison and there is no upper limit to the number of times that the court may extend the timeframe

It depends on why someone is in prison though. Most of those incarcerated here are for drug offences (possession, selling, distributing, or stealing to buy drugs). Most should not be incarcerated or get a slap on the wrist.

I agree on all points. The simple fact that she can see her mistakes and lay out her reasoning is why I’m voting for her.

I didn’t mean to imply they could have seen what was coming or should have, just that their view of things meant something with bad consequences got passed, the thing they got in exchange didn’t

Their willingness to compromise on crime legislation was one of the worst parts of their centrism.

Bernie Sanders too, and not just the 1994 Crime Bill but other crime bills with mandatory sentencing. He even used his tough on crime stance to win re election.

She pushed his crime bill as the first lady? That is surprising to you? Privately Eleanor Roosevelt tried incredibly hard to convince FDR to both accept Jewish refugees and not send Japanese Americans to internment camps. For various reasons, that failed. Even though she disagreed with his actions, she did not

I don’t think Fleabag is horrible. She’s not an easy character -- she’s grieving and angry and acerbic -- but I found her bothr relatable and likeable. She’s just a person, really, one that be awful and great in the same day.

I do not disagree. I’d say though the real failing is in their assumption that the compromises will continue and flaws can get fixed. When that breaks down (as it has in the US in the last 15-20 years) we end up with years of lingering pain while things go unaddressed. Even so I don’t lay that failure at the centrists

Their willingness to compromise on crime legislation was one of the worst parts of their centrism. I’ve always felt that way but it’s not about to stop me from voting for her, nor regret voting for him.

I’m happier dealing with pragmatic centrists who are willing to compromise and then come back to the table to work

Can’t we have any TV shows about nonhorrible people? Like, just one, maybe?

Politicians have cynically run on platforms that go “hard on crime,” leading to the monetization of of keeping people in jail, disproportionally affecting black men and women. Those politicians include both Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump.

You’re kind of splitting hairs with this comment, considering that it’s only a trailer.

Considering that I literally, just ended a conversation with my best male friend where I lamented the difficulty in finding someone that I loved AND had a monster penis that I would be happy fucking for the rest of my days, this show speaks to me...

I just finished The New Jim Crow yesterday. One of the best books I’ve read in a long, long time.
