It seems the only way to keep a “bookstore” brand alive, at least in expensive retail locations, is to branch into other lifestyle products (examples: Amazon online, or Indigo in Canada). I expect Amazon retail stores selling books will be a beachhead to selling a lot of their other popular lines.
