Well the reason is that the show is happening in the real time but the snap never happens.

I personally read that as a sort of sisterhood dynamic rather than being a couple. They went through training together, Carol’s disappearance was obviously a big emotional impact. You could go a layer deeper and infer that they had to deal with institutional sexism towards female pilots together.
