That really would be the worst case scenario for him. He has to hope that Republicans sit home now because the GOP can’t use this as a campaign point against him.

Yeah but if it’s the difference between him eking out a win thanks to what will hopefully be larger Republican apathy vs Democratic disillusionment, and if Democrats pull off a shocker and win the Senate, suddenly it becomes a lot more important that he has a D next to his name. If he voted no and lost, people would…
He could’ve. But if he squeaks out a win and that ends up being the difference between Democrats taking control of the Senate, which is already a slim proposition, it could prove the more advantageous choice. Right and wrong is always easy in a vacuum.
Except his vote yes meant nothing in terms of whether Kavanaugh got confirmed or not. Had he voted no Pence would have simply cast the tie-breaking vote. Or they would’ve made that one Senator miss his daughter’s wedding. Either way, a no vote from Manchin wasn’t stopping it.
And that’s between 1% and 45% less than a Republican will vote against the interests of the left. Plus, if the Dems have any chance of taking over the Senate, those D’s and R’s after peoples’ names matter.
I mean as far as I know Manchin isn’t racist, so objectively that would be worse.
Oh I’m not saying anyone should feel bad for him, but really, what options did he realistically have? He was damned if he did, damned if he didn’t at this point.
Well 45% sure isn’t great, but simple math says getting 45% of what you want is better than 0% of what you want.
Other than the fact that it means it’s likely that someone who could be even worse might get elected, sure.
There really was no way out for Manchin on this. Either he voted to confirm and hopes that Republicans don’t turn out and hangs on to his seat by a slim margin, or he voted against and it becomes a rallying cry for Republicans in his heavily Republican state. While it may be seen as self-serving, because it is, I…
Other than the socialists like Ocasio-Cortez, who despite what the writers here think are only winning in already heavily blue states, I doubt it. Most of them benefited from it. And despite what Democrats say, once tax cuts are passed they are reluctant to raise taxes because even when necessary, doing so is…
Attempting to encourage people to vote by suggesting that the Democrats will vote to impeach Kavanaugh is maybe not the best strategy, because:
Just confirmed, 50-48.
While it might be mildly entertaining for McConnell to have to send law enforcement to literally drag Democrats to the Senate floor, even attempting to deny quorum would be an ultimately meaningless gesture given that it’s well within the Speaker’s power to have members arrested for not showing up if it prevents a…
I’ve yet to see one reasonable suggestion of what, the fuck exactly, Democrats were supposed to do in this situation. They were fucked from the jump. Shitting their diapers and throwing a tantrum on the Senate floor would accomplish nothing. Republicans have them by the short hairs right now, and if that changes in…
I didn’t think pornography was allowed here. All good bacon should crunch. Squishy, flaccid bacon is just sad.
Yeah there’s a lot of confusion over what the ABA actually is, but in reality they’re no different from any other organization of professionals. They can wag their finger, but if none of the states where a person has passed the bar exam decide to do anything about it, it doesn’t really mean a whole lot.
The ABA doesn’t disbar you though, that’s up to the jurisdictions where you’re licensed to practice law.
Except nobody is expecting anything from George W. Bush, Bill Clinton, George H.W. Bush, or Jimmy Carter the same way people apparently expect Obama to swoop in and save us from ourselves, change the Constitution so he can run for a 3rd term, and usher in a new progressive utopia despite not actually being a…
Yeah seems like maybe someone who is in a solidly Democratic seat ought to take one for the team. It’s not like them missing the confirmation vote is going to make a huge difference.
