Oh, I know there are differing laws—I’ve lived in IL, TX, and MA, and they all have different rules about who can be in the left lane and for what reason. I more just wanted to make the point that if you’re being courteous and alert, you’re probably being legal (speeding aside :) )

Well, passing on the left is just common courtesy. Also not just hanging out in the left lane.

MA has many intersections where it’s illegal to turn right on red even when it is clearly safe to do so, but these are generally clearly posted. The problem is that people tend to think that it’s illegal everywhere b/c about 60% of intersections have those signs.
