It can differ based on the kind of loan of course—personal loans are not the same area as a student loan—but more regulation is necessary. But…

Totally agree about keeping them even with prime mortgage loan rates. This is exactly where the government needs to step in and regulate. Young adults need protection from their inexperience. Student loans should legally be no higher than 4% (and even that is higher than our mortgage rate).

Recently, my chair broke while I was in a Zoom meeting and I went crashing into my computer stand, so I sympathize. 

As a teacher, I don’t know. My only rule is: one student at a time. (They absolutely will socialize and lose track of time otherwise.) But I also tell them that if it’s an emergency then they should just run out of the room, no explanation needed.

I paid back my loans because they were small but come on. The interest rate on student loans is “pretty much like stealing.” A $20,000 loan ballooned to closer to a $30,000 loan in 4 years because with the 2008 crisis I had a shitty job and could only pay the interest rate at first. Debt collectors are absolutely not kidding around. As soon as I married my spouse, I started getting phone calls from collectors for one of his family members who doesn’t pay their loans. (I don’t answer the calls, but they leave me long messages about “Just wanting to get in touch with _____”.)
