Sad that you are using Jezebel and Deadspin as your benchmark. Both sites curate to a narrative and block all discussion with how they structure their approvals. Jalopnik and Lifehacker seem to be the model for civil conversation over touchy subjects.

1st Gear: No surprise at all, each company wants what looks good from a PR perspective and aligns with core competencies and strengths within their own. Take away the PR portion of their statements and you would probably get a much different story.

This one is awesome because you can pop it in and out with ease. We leave it out most of the time just because it makes it easy to get people back and forth.

It was a joke and people took it too far. It has always been the manual wagon and then diesel was added and then brown somehow got tacked on.  If anything we all want manual wagons and can skip the other two happily.
