Frankly, you could just say in all honesty that the guy is threatening or harassing you. This is some serious bullshit. If I opened a door to some random guy waiting for me and blocking my path, I’d be fucking terrified. Anyone would be.

Being a white woman who grew up in a very white neighborhood, I just still remember being young in the early 80s when it was completely unacceptable to use the term “black.” So “African-American” is just what I naturally default to, and probably even would (like a dork) in a foreign country.
