I think part of it is that conversations about childbirth can escalate rather quickly into horror stories. If you’ve been around the block for a while, you probably have a few anecdotes of horror stories that women you know have experienced, if not yourself or in your own family, etc.

I honestly had no idea until friends started giving birth. It shocked the living fuck out of me, cold sweats level horror, and basically made me consider the entire prospect of pregnancy and childbirth with a giant NO FUCKING WAY. This response might be part of the reason women are not told about it.
