Seems like uninstalling stuff you don't want would be easier. The rescue media is usually stored on a partition now. It restores from a WIM file (usually), then tasks in all the additional software. Seems fine to me.

I don't disagree at all with contributing to an IRA. Keep a separate account for savings (see emergency fund above). How many of us have uttered "I really wish I would have saved more or started earlier". I think IRA is one of them, especially if your company matches in any way.
