Have you never seen Spartacus?
Have you never seen Spartacus?
ITA. I’ve been involved in civil rights work long enough to know that there is a small, but extremely vocal contingent of wanna be leaders who react extremely negatively to anyone (especially female of any race) who is put in the spotlight in social justice arenas.
She also directed people to Sahil Gadhavi’s response to her photo, for what that’s worth.
I am black and agree with you on this , the authors is salty against the wrong person IMO the white people who find it fascinating when one of thier own says the same thing that black people have been saying for decades but in part largely that is how white people are . She wasn’t asking for a cookie white people…
You are complaining that you spent an extra semester at uni?
How about we stop gate keeping. We need numbers. We have people having out in the open, torch lit clan rallies and we are upset about this girl? I’m not talking about deluding what constitutes justice but we are in a position that roughly half the country finds common decency so unpalatable that they elected Donald…
Seriously. The cynicism here on The Root is a bit much for this black man.
There’s a difference between expecting an ovation, and getting torn down for taking the first step toward awakening.
White girl a little woke.
Fuck this wypipo for caring a little.
I hate that I need to repeat this (a position that I KNOW you are intimately familiar with, Mr Harriot!) BUT:
That the thing. Part of this article seems to think that she was trying to educate black people about this and it’s like...no? This is pretty obviously aimed at white people who do shit like carry around swords without thinking about how someone else doing the exact thing you’re doing (or in this case, something…
I agree with you largely, where I diverge with you and the OP is that I never saw her asking black people for a cookie. She was a white person, talking to white people, about the life-endangering truth of white supremacy. I don’t think we were the audience. What’s the difference between this and what Tim Wise does?
I dont get the outrage. Being Black myself, I applauded her. She pretty much called the school out and others on their bullshit and exposed the stark contrast between Black and White. She never claimed to be an activist or anything like that. She saw the double standard, and proved that it existed.
Yeah, I didn’t get the sense that she was bragging about it. And you know what? Sadly A LOT of white people still don’t get what white privilege means. I find concrete examples like this one a great way to tell people that no, it does not mean that all white people are rich.
I just wonder if we’re losing the concept of allyship with y’all, because we’re A. Mad at you for good reason
Though I fully agree with the larger point of the issue, speaking up like the young lady did is still overall beneficial. It’s better to say something, and use your platform of whiteness to reach out to other ignorant whites, than to be on the side of silence and complacency. If anything, her simple Facebook post made…
I can’t understand how or why it has taken this long for people to wake up but I wont attack this young woman for waking up. And I will even thank her for at least trying to make a difference. Not everyone needs to be the next MLK. If more people would take even the small step she has, we would see some real change…
Serious question, what are wypipo supposed to do in a situation like this? Not say anything publicly? I feel like our reaction to this comes off as hating. She’s critical of white supremacy, she points out a contradiction and I’d never heard of this story until you reported it, now I want to know how Colgate is going…
Saying that health care is a right, but sharing the burden of that right is a privilege, is a contradiction. Anything that is a right has both a shared benefit and a shared cost. A right is not not something that a person should have access to under certain circumstances (they have money for insurance, have a good…
