Because the system can malfunction or error, or the cop can use it as an excuse when it didn’t really return anything. It’s basically giving them another excuse locked behind a 3rd party contract for data to violate the 4th amendment. 

Watch the screen in the cop car and see the problem. 

No. These things are running all the time, while the cop is just driving around. They scan EVERY license plate they see, not just those suspected of doing something wrong.

It’s not about an expectation of privacy, it’s about being pulled over and harassed for any variety of reasons when you haven’t done anything to break the law. This is just another reason for cops to pull people over to violate 4th amendment rights when they don’t really have probably cause.

And it is purpose built (at least the preproduction ones) for a utilitarian/off road/adventure lifestyle market, so it makes sense. 

You know the interesting thing about your last point is that Tesla has refused to learn from 100 years of previous mistakes in the manufacturing process. It remains to be seen whether Rivian will make those same mistakes or learn from experienced professionals. It doesn’t have to emulate Tesla in this regard.
