We’re also missing context as to the rate of fatalities. Fatalities could have risen, the number of trips driven on these roads could have also risen proportionally so you would probably expect a rise in collisions and fatalities. Just looking at raw crash numbers is a flaw.

I guess that’s not exactly what I’m arguing and I’ve framed it poorly. I want to know more information on these roads before just saying the speed limit went up so the raw number of crashes went up. There are lots of other factors that can cause a raw number to go up, we need rate and population of driver statistics…

Sure, but then they don’t support that with any data in the piece to associate this rise in crashes with speed. Of course anecdotally you can say that because as they point out in the article it’s physics.

I just want to understand the causes of the crashes. If speed isn’t the primary driver then correlating a speed increase to a crash increase is bad statistics.
