I read the criticism before seeing the show and came away much more impressed with Stewart than the internet. The explicit metaphor used at the end of the show was “Biden might not be the Conan we need to take on Trump’s barbarian hordes.  Ultimately, if you want the world to be a better place, get off your ass and do

Right?  Every criticism of Biden was followed up with Trump doing the exact same thing.  Did anyone complaining actually watch it?

I remember Jon making it pretty clear Biden’s not nearly as bad as Trump.

Agreed. This is a super weird review of a tent pole blockbuster. AVClub always skews hard to the indie darlings.

Yeah it’s literally about a colonized planet.

I think it’s weird how “bothsidesism” has become a thing, as though refusing to criticize one’s own side is the gusty and non-lazy option. Same with “whataboutism”, as though “What about.....?” questions are bad.

This whole review, sentence fragments and all, reads like hastily scrawled first impressions.

when the story is clearly borrowing from myths and folklore from a particular part of the world, perhaps the casting could have been more diverse.”

First there should be a villain called Neil, though.

Neil before Zod.

Too late.

I think “whataboutism” is dumb too, as if it’s wrong to go “What about...?”

Except that’s not what Stewart did. He didn’t say “this makes him as bad a Trump” and to claim otherwise is putting words in his mouth. Pointing out the obvious, including clips of him mentally melting down in the middle of the press briefing held to demonstrate his mental acuity does not make him a Trump supporter.

I agree. I think what gets me is having someone say “hey, I plan to vote for Candidate X, even though I feel really conflicted by these OBVIOUS ISSUES Candidate X brings to the table” and Candidate X’s supporters melting down over... a fellow supporter having a genuine conversation and pointing out said OBVIOUS

I enjoyed S4 but these criticisms still have some validity, and there isn’t some inherent evil in daring to voice them.

S1 of True Detective is one of the most over praised show’s ever created. What made the show memorable had nothing to do with Pizzolatto’s amateurish film school writing but was more so because of Woody Harrelson/Matt McConaughey chemistry, Cary Fukunaga’s directing & Alexandra Daddario’s physique.

I plan to vote for Joe Biden. I also hate Joe Biden. Like, hate.

Also, all the women just happened to be hanging out in that tiny house? They just kept coming and coming like an unending handkerchief. It made me laugh.

Another question—if the Tsalal research had the potential to unlock a cure of cancer and all sort of diseases, why did they need a ruse like the mine to melt the permafrost and speed things up?. Why not just build something at the facility that, like, generated heat without poisoning an entire town and causing all

Did Navarro clean up Clark before making him tape the confession? Or was his lack of blood just a continuity error?
