I think you’re right. You first know Rick has some kind of a heart in the episode where Morty gets to pick the adventure and they go to the fantasy world, and Rick kills the king who assaulted Morty. Later on he also seflessly saves Morty when the time lines are fractured and they need the neck bands to align them.
