It's just that "calories out" includes whatever energy it takes to break down what you're eating and depends on your personal metabolic rate. And "calories in" is just the stuff your body processes, not stuff that passes through without

@bookmatch: I think it reflects the fact that construction materials are often standardized to US sizes. That sheet of plywood could just as easily be 2m x 1m. A 2x4 might as well be (and indeed, almost is) a 5x10.

It always freaks me out to see people on this track without helmets on.
