This seems like a case of 'let's do this because we can'.
Not quite the same as with 'traditional works'. Traditionally a copy is not identical with the original. In traditional works, there will always be a 'master' or 'original'. It might be a negative, a mold or an actual painting. Copies will differ ever so slightly from the original.
I think the talent of the developers has less to do with it.
I find it interesting that digital drawings have existed for decades but with the introduction of the iPad they are finally beginning to be accepted as art. I guess it has something to do with the more direct interaction the touchscreen offers.
