Yup. In Colorado the lowest octane available is 85 and “Premium” is 89. You can find 91 occasionally. Less O2 in the air makes the air/fuel mixture at a given compression less likely to knock.

Then you run premium. Running regular and having the car pull timing will be a power loss. The car was not designed to run on lower octane fuel.
