The question is not really why we live past menopause, but why we have menopause at all. Most female mammals, as well as male humans, retain some degree of fertility throughout life. Cessation of fertility must be actively selected for.

Premeds, man. They were my cash cow. I TAed orgo lab for $6.75/h for one semester before I realized I could make 8x that much by slapping up some paper signs in the chemistry building. I was a steal. Rates for professional private tutors were in the hundreds of dollars per hour. This was in NYC.

But blue collar jobs are hardly a fountain of stable cash. There are fewer and fewer of them, and they pay less well than most white- and even many pink- collar jobs. I don’t think men have the lock on good jobs. I used to tutor for $50/hour in college in the 1990s.

Yeah. I completely switched fields after I realized that for me, basic science was incompatible with being a parent. I moved to a more clinical, less prestigious area. I’m still hanging on to research by the skin of my teeth, that’s on me for having three kids though.

Anger, entitlement, and a violent personality aren’t things that ‘count’ as mental illness and they can only be treated if the individual himself feels they are problematic and seeks help.
