The article is still live it looks like: http://www.slate.com/blogs/the_slat…
I lived in Belgium for a bit. My friends live either outside Brussels, or right there, next to the EU. As a New Yorker I always arrogantly felt like if I was going to experience terrorism (again) it would happen in New York - not sleepy ol Belgium. Horrifying. My heart goes out to everyone in Brussels and Belgium.…
Me either. I love pet pics and I want to snuggle all the animals in this thread.. But it is also a little bit embarrassing that in every tragic post on Jez, the top comment is kittens. It feels like our default reaction as a group is to be twee and I feel like we’re better than that? Idk imma shut up now bc I feel…
Yeah! It’s not pretending the horrible things don’t exist or matter. It’s reminding ourselves that lovely, comforting things exist, even when the world feels horrible and sad.
They did it, guys. They made my Brussels feel like a scary place.

Just saw on Facebook that her sister posted she messaged her. She’s safe and trying to get out of the city for a bit.
Why the hell not? Some of us have family there. Just because we’re looking at animal pictures to remind ourselves that the world isn’t entirely a hate-filled cesspool doesn’t mean we’re ignoring the horror of the situation.
I saw this on my morning Twitter reading before I got out of bed and just kept on scrolling. This goddamn fucked up world. I feel like I’m desensitized to this shit now. What the fuck does it say about this messed up world when mass shootings and terrorist attacks are such a regular occurrence that they illicit…
Like Turkey a few days ago. This is awful. It is all awful. Every time it happens, anywhere.
Yeah and if it doesn’t happen in America or Europe, no one pays attention to it at all :-/
