I agree for well made furniture from good materials. A lot of perfectly useful and affordable furniture is made from MDF, plywoods, etc. Even with some solid wood furniture, I’ve sanded down only to find some ugly joinery that should definitely be hidden. Nice dovetails or tenons aren’t always available on yard sale…

You can always use a simple paint sprayer attached to an air compressor to get custom colors with a more even finish. Cheap enough and reusable as long as they’re cared for properly and can be found on craigslist.
