For future reference and your sanity, instead of doing coats of poly, you could use a single thick coat of mod podge and then just pour to desired thickness with resin. The resin you can sand and polish to the point of not needing to put a glass top on it. Sounds like a cool project though.

I’ll go with this one even though it isn’t quite done yet (just need to finish sanding, wood burn what I want and stain) for the pure function of it. I took a VW Caddy tailgate and made a trunk out of it.
