Can it bring those layers in? Sure. But *only* when combined with good writing. Without good writing, you get the Star Wars prequels.
Sure, but we don't remember how good it is for its filmstock. We remember the characters, the acting, the plot.
Same thing applies to movies. Huge special effects budgets don't make entertaining action movies. Good writing, engaging characters, and clever plots do.
In other news, you don't need to meet a word count to have a good story.
