Doubt any of the actors are here to read this but you can typically un-disappear disappearing ink with an iron. Other inks can be reclaimed using sodium hydroxide.

We were a lot more forgiving of plot holes and drastic, unexplained character changes, too.

You’ve basically got it right. Car skins that traverse our roads will see all sorts of different compounds that can react with stainless steel. Sitting in place, the skins will have no issues besides a biofilm that will build up and can be cleaned/buffed off.

Who would have guessed that using stainless steel for the skins would be a bad idea?! Wait, any automotive engineer?

This would have been around 2009-2011.  I may actually be wrong about this.  We didn’t really deal with airbags so it’s my kind-of-layperson understanding.
