Michigan's thumb is a scary place. It's like a big chunk of rural Alabama has been transported a thousand miles north.

I live in the Upper Peninsula. Geographically just about as far from "The South" as you can get. Yet, this election season, there was a big campaign sign for a bunch of local asshole nominees that sported two confederate flags for several weeks, before someone apparently had the sense to take them down. They didn't

Um, are you me? My week in pop culture included discovering and becoming hooked on the You Must… podcast, and the Joan Crawford series was the first I listened to! I'm skipping around, and am now going through the MGM series. Just a really well done podcast all-around. I talked to my mom earlier this evening and

This is insane! I'm sitting here reading the Google doc with my mouth literally hanging open in disbelief. I've been on AVClub forever and feel a connection to other regular and long-time commenters, so… to put it in teenage girl-speak, I can't even.

I think the Trump situation has had the opposite effect on me; I try to avoid conflict on social media, and can hardly bear to read the news (I've almost eliminated NPR news from my radio), and I've been spending more time getting actual work done. Conflict at work (a college) isn't so much of a problem as mutual

This is like the third Bob Vila comment. Bob hasn't been on the show for, what, a decade? Get over it! Move on with your lives!

Mainly because he's got diamonds on the soles of his shoes.

…and while I prefer one of the local places if I'm planning on ordering pizza, when you're coming home late from work and need to grab a fast dinner on the way, nothing beats a $6 "Hot & Ready".

Those bulbs are really cool, but I can't figure out where I'd use them. I think they'd be too dim for kitchen fixture, where they would look quite nice.

Mine too! I'm not sure I've ever seen the single barrel variety.

Or high school and a skip day at the beach. SoCo and lemonade. Still makes my stomach clench to think of it.

I mean that mainly in comparison to SUV's which is what the "too cool for school" types usually turn to as an alternative. My everyday car is actually a small wagon.

I'm not going to replace my ancient non-HE top loader (it has fake wood trim on the control panel) until I absolutely have to. And then I'm getting an HE top loader.

I will give up my minivan when they pry my cold, dead hands off the wheel. Which is unlikely to happen because minivans are very safe.

Yeah, the "no core beliefs" comment seems more and more obvious as time (Jesus, has it only been 10days?) goes on. That's what makes his presidency especially frightening; you really can't predict what he will do. Putting Bannon on the NSC being the obvious current example.

Hmm. Wasn't he literally waiving the rainbow flag during the primaries? I thought the one not-crazy thing he had held on to was gay rights (to a point). Of course, now that he's presumably been hanging out with Pence for a while, I would guess that he's easily influenced.

Why I love AVClub comments #8: The word "ouroboros" used by two different commenters on an article about Taco Bell.

5 7 9? Chess King? It's like reliving my teenage years!

Hmm. I see a master's thesis in sociology in the making here!

One of my favorite childhood memories: In that era, our TV had an early remote, and would change channels if you jingled a pile of pennies near it. We found this out when one of use dumped out a pile of change to count in the living room. I've never heard of anyone else having this experience.
