Rail isn’t effective at last mile delivery and never has been intended for that.

Letting the cats herd themselves isn’t a plan either (I’m def one of the cats)
I’d simply ask a NJ Senator to hold up any aid to KY until Ted Cruz apologizes for delaying Sandy aid.
No a CME isn’t going to harm individual devices...unless they’re connected to the grid. CME’s while strong are fairly dilute. It’s when that energy gets captured by an antenna (our electrical grid) that’s 100s or 1000s of miles long that charge is funneled to a line and zaps the transformers at the ends of the long…
A Carrington Event scenario is probably one of the better ones for those with disabilities. It’s mostly going to be an issue of power for a few years max while transformers are rebuilt.
I totally nuked it. Just look at it. Yep, that was totally me.
I see the 15-18 hour measure, swear I saw 10 but longer is better :)
Suffice it to say I’m talking more about people with the resources to be posting things online. A back country cattle rancher in Africa is certainly going to handle the modern world going splat better than the modern world inhabitants.
Do you have sources for how much warning we might get? I think it’s measured in hours at best. CMEs *can* reach the earth in 10 hours...
‘Many’ hours is more than I’m aware of. CMEs can get here in as little as 10 hours for really big ones, days for smaller ones. The former are usually the ones we would care about.
I’m saying there is no current plan to disconnect the grids given a certain condition.
You are correct. We don’t have such a system in place, hence there aren’t any false alarms.
devices will be fine. Unplugged or adequate surge protection is enough.
One thing the article doesn’t really address is the grid scale transformers. We can’t make them but more than a small fraction per year of the current installed number.
Assuming it’s not plugged in or is adequately surge protected, electronic devices are fine for a CMP/Solar Flare event.
I’m trying to decide how the rampant conspiracy theory, everybody having guns shooting and the lack of info stemming from that type of event...would be distinguishable from today having instant access to information.
Perhaps, he wouldn’t remember either way ;-)
Agreed, and certainly as host behavior changes, the definition of ‘optimal’ changes as well.
It’s just an overused contrarian argument.
And tomorrow he’d be extolling the civil war airports for their fine people on both sides
