    We aren’t talking about how many gears the transmission has, we’re talking about manual versus automatic.
    So yes, you’re correct that a 6 speed is available in higher trim Golfs. But that does not change the fact that a manual transmission is NOT offered in higher trim Golfs. In fact, the manual transmission offered in

    VW has been doing this to the Golf too.
    IIRC, 2015 was the last year you could buy a top trim model with the good transmission. If you want a new-ish one, you better hurry. 2015s are getting older by the day.

    I used to, so I understand your point. I figured then that buying an automatic would make the commute about 5% less miserable and the occasional vacation blast to the mountains 50% less enjoyable. That’s a tough tradeoff.

    Totally with you there. In my opinion, a racetrack is the one place the higher cost and lower reliability of an automatic transmission make sense. They make no sense at all on the street.
    But a wagon is a car typically bought for the street.

    Agreed. It’s the best automatic transmission I’ve ever experienced.
    I’d still rather have a manual. But I won’t yell at them this time, as this one’s thoroughly left my price range anyway. These things used to be cheaper.

    Iff there aren’t packaging issues to contend with, I’d agree that the design and analysis efforts would be pretty minimal. I don’t know what the cost impact per vehicle would be.

    Safety is a balance. Always. Just like every design decision. My point was that dedicating more resources to the driver side of the vehicle is not only unsurprising, it’s sensible. It’s a completely reasonable compromise to make when balancing cost

    This step alone could take literally minutes in a modern house. Plumbing codes keep requiring larger pipes, and fixtures keep getting lower flow restrictors. I basically never wash my hands with hot water at home anymore. It isn’t worth the wait.
