Majority owner Joe Lacob wasn’t born rich. First college graduate in his family. Studied biology and epidemiology and many of his investments have centered around that. The other prominent owner, Peter Guber, made his money as movie producer, and he also wasn’t born rich. Usually when I write more than a sentence or

constantly trying to have these big grand moments without actually having earned any of them” - yep, that describes the aesthetic of J.J. Abrams, who was a mentor to Disco’s Alex Kurtzman.

Burnham wasn’t in uniform, if that’s what you’re referring to.

Wow, this is getting to be routine. Disco superfans really can’t debate their fave show. (Maybe because it ranges from shallow to incoherent.) They just have tantrums. A bit disturbing.

Great point about Fruits Loops cereal. Thanks for that. Love the passion and cogence of the Disco superfan.

There’s a shocker- the Disco superfan is unable to intelligently debate the show, but instead opts for tantrums about handjobs.  Feeeelings. I wuv feeewings.

Yeah, it’s alarming how often I see this sentiment expressed by the Disco superfan. They don’t like to think. They like to feeeeeel.

Nah, forget DS9 or TNG, Disco just isn’t intelligent sci-fi of any stripe. Nor is it coherent storytelling.

Exactly. I don’t see much insightful defenses of Disco from the the Disco superfans. I see “OMG I love it because it gives me the feels.” That whole ‘Star Trek as food for thought’ tradition dies a little every week thanks to the shallow-as-a-puddle Disco dance-off.

Solid point.

No, you’re watching the same show, but this professional reviewer is, presumably, more knowledgeable/experienced than you as to what constitutes competent storytelling that isn’t lazy and hackish.

More Disco miscellany! Maybe one day this show will acquire more fans than there are professional Babylon 5 cosplayers.

Or, if people think there is a good basis to compare Discovery to The Orville, you could let them talk about what they want to talk about, and you could concern yourself more with what you’d like to say? If you think comparisons of Discovery and Orville are tedious, one trick you could employ is not reading them.

So far, Discovery has challenged very little, except coherence.

GR was demoted on the film series to “Executive Consultant” but was a regular presence on Next Generation until his health prevented him from doing so. The notion that he was “fired” from Next Gen is pure fiction.

The Bad Robot Trek trilogy grossed 1.2 billion. Not Skywalker or Avengers money, but not quite a miserable failure. The HD remastering of TNG was not just for Blu-rays, but for streaming (and broadcast reruns). The glimpses we’ve got of streaming numbers tell us Star Trek series have been heavily watched on Netflix. Th

To be fairer, the likes of Wrath of Khan and Voyage Home were big hits and among the top earners in the years of their release. In a word: mainstream. Next Generation got great TV ratings despite being syndicated. Is Star Trek less popular than Star Wars and Marvel? Sure, but so is everything.

I’m not a huge fan of The Orville, but it was, at least, more competently produced television than Discovery. And it had a few charming Roddenberry homages. But it would be funny if Orville outlasts Les Moonves’ premium VOD tentpole boondoggle.

That’s an excuse given to sack simpletons who were in way over their heads.

They likely were abusive, but THR report is the usual PR spin in a trade mag. Should not be taken at face value. Creative decisions were also a factor in the firing, in all likelihood.
