I've rescued old cooking cauldrons that had been used as planters by having them sandblasted. Electrolysis cleaning is even better, but you need an outdoors workshop with electricity since dangerous gasses are produced.

I've made deals with my local sandblasting shop to sandblast the rust off garage sale cast iron. They'll do it cheap as an end if day or in-betweener project.
