I think the point was to make it an issue for the moderates that didn’t want to hear that in 2016. The Civil Rights movement really picked up steam when moderates saw footage of the peaceful marches being met with autocratic violence, which is the strategy I’m seeing (and may be projecting) here.

I think in 2016, Trump was still enough of an unknown quantity that allowed people to project what they wanted to onto him. I don’t think that’s the case anymore, but I take your point.
