Chris Carter is having the exact type of year you would expect from a guy that large in his 30s. His bat was never that great to begin with and when you don’t get home runs out of him he is downright bad. In his 8 seasons he’s never hit .240.

I don’t see an issue with this. It would be dumb to withdraw right now- he earned that spot. It’s not like the alternate isn’t sitting around Erin Hills practicing right now. If there is a 1/500 chance that he would be delayed until Friday I’d take it- it’s not hurting anyone.

The closest parallel to this is Tim Tebow. Tim was certainly one of the best 90 QBs in the league when he could no longer find work. The last thing a team wants is a crappy/popular backup QB to pressure their already struggling QB. Also, Kaep is 30 this season, how much longer can he be effective as a running QB?

I’m sure he’d be giving up a lot of money, but it wouldn’t really be quite that bad. By going to San Antonio he gets out of a 13% income tax in Cali, and the cost of living has to be much lower in SA.

There is actually something called an intentional walk that was created for just that situation- and it doesn’t require you throwing a 98MPH fastball at someone.
