In fairness to wheel spacers, as long as they’re being used to correct the offset on an aftermarket wheel AND the studs or lug bolts are upgraded appropriately (both for strength and length), there isn’t a thing wrong with them.
I mean, that person paid good money to make it feel like something was off all the time. Probably not a very engaged driver ;)
